DVR’s : Standalone vs PC Based System
Clients are often faced with the option of choosing between n Standalone (embedded) DVR (Digital Video Recorder) or a PC Based DVR System. When deciding on which system is best suited for your project, it is important to note the following differences:
• Standalone DVR is older technology which is based on a Standalone unit with all components included namely CPU, DVR Card, Hard Drive(s),etc.
• The OS (Operating System) and DVR Software is on a chip.
• A PC Based DVR System is a normal PC which is equipped with a DVR Card and the necessary input/output ports and accessories.
Clients must ask the following questions when deciding between the 2 options:
• Why do I need a CCTV System
• What does the CCTV System need to do
• Conditions under which the system will be used
Variables such as recording and/or real time viewing capabilities and the the ability to change/upgrade are the most critical aspects to consider when making your decision .
Advantages of a PC Based DVR System
They are flexible. They are easily upgradeable and can be expanded to include as many hard drives as required, CD Burners, DVD Burners and Internet Capabilities.
PC Based Digital Video Recorder Security Systems are normally considered easier to operate.
A PC Based DVR System can easily be upgraded from a 4 channel DVR to a 32 channel DVR with little effort or cost.
Advantages of a Standalone DVR
Standalone Digital Video Recorders are normally equipped with Linux as operating system(embedded) which is excluded from the outside world.
The advantage of this is that it is less succeptable to virus attacks and subsequently less maintenance intensive.
Standalone DVR’s are more diverse in utilization in extreme conditions. PC’s are normally sensitive to temperatures and will subsequently affect your decision although this problem could be addressed by ensuring the correct housing of equipment. Standalone DVR’s are also not subjected to Microsoft Anti-Virus software and subsequent continueous updates.
