CCTV – Closed Circuit Television
Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal from one place to another. This allows for images to be transmitted via a camera to one screen or multiple screens.
CCTV differs from broadcasting. The biggest difference is that CCTV is typically a closed circuit where broadcasting is focused on transmitting signals to viewers.
CCTV is used equipment in banks for monitor and security purposes, in retail shops, industrial businesses, hospitals, airports, military centres and many more places that require the monitoring of people movement, asset protection, and security.
For industrial companies CCTV is typically used to observe parts, check on processes and monitor people in the building or outside the building. A control room is used a control point for monitoring all activities.
Control rooms are ideal for business who want to have a focused effort on monitoring and security. These controls rooms can be large offices or be a single room with a couple of monitors. In the control room you could find DVRS (digital video recorders). These recorders capture images digitally.
CCTV systems is a good way to prevent and fight crime. These closed circuit televisions record movements. If a crime is committed these recordings can be viewed and used as a source to establish the true actions at the time.
Advanced CCTV systems use small high definition colour enriched cameras that can focus to high levels of detail. Linking these cameras to a central computer enables the tracking of objects, semi-automatically. This technology that enable this is often referred to as VCA (Video Content Analysis). More and more companies are developing this technology due to the higher demand places on security requirements.
Installation of CCTV systems is typically custom made. The main reason is that every situation will be different and will require an unique look at how the system needs to be used. For this reason it is important to use a company who can assist with the installation, and be capable of getting more out of the system using experience and knowledge in the field.

CCTV Systems:Dome Cameras vs. Box Cameras
Clients are often faced with the option of choosing between a Dome Camera and a Box Camera. When deciding on this aspect, it is important to note the following:
Dome Cameras
- Dome Cameras are primarily utilized in smaller areas although some Dome Cameras are equipped with advanced lenses to cover larger areas. These cameras are however rather more expensive due to its superior specifications.
- Camera Instruments are protected from dust and natural elements by the Glass Dome which ensures low maintenance and effectiveness of the camera
- Dome Cameras are less effective where large distances are to be covered as the space within the dome restricts large lenses
- Dome Cameras are attractive enough to blend within the environment
- It has an increased deterrent value due to the fact that the direction and size of the camera lens is not visible.
- Dome Cameras are predominantly used at the following business types:
- Shopping Centers
- Retail Stores
- Perimeter Fencing and Gates (Waterproof Domes)
- Office Blocks
Box Cameras
- Box Cameras are primarily used in premises where long distances have to be covered by increasing the lens capacity
- Box Cameras are affected by acute angles and the placement thereof is critical when installed.
- Cameras are effectively housed in casings to protect against vandalism and natural elements such as rain, condensation, dust, etc
- Box Cameras are predominantly used at the following business types:
- Factories
- Distribution Centers
- Warehouses
There are many variables to consider when deciding which camera is best suited for the job. The above comparison is only a glimpse of the complexity of this subject and will each job require in-depth analyses of all variables before making a decision. Other variables include the following:
- Day/Night utilization

DVR’s : Standalone vs PC Based System
Clients are often faced with the option of choosing between n Standalone (embedded) DVR (Digital Video Recorder) or a PC Based DVR System. When deciding on which system is best suited for your project, it is important to note the following differences:
• Standalone DVR is older technology which is based on a Standalone unit with all components included namely CPU, DVR Card, Hard Drive(s),etc.
• The OS (Operating System) and DVR Software is on a chip.
• A PC Based DVR System is a normal PC which is equipped with a DVR Card and the necessary input/output ports and accessories.
Clients must ask the following questions when deciding between the 2 options:
• Why do I need a CCTV System
• What does the CCTV System need to do
• Conditions under which the system will be used
Variables such as recording and/or real time viewing capabilities and the the ability to change/upgrade are the most critical aspects to consider when making your decision .
Advantages of a PC Based DVR System
They are flexible. They are easily upgradeable and can be expanded to include as many hard drives as required, CD Burners, DVD Burners and Internet Capabilities.
PC Based Digital Video Recorder Security Systems are normally considered easier to operate.
A PC Based DVR System can easily be upgraded from a 4 channel DVR to a 32 channel DVR with little effort or cost.
Advantages of a Standalone DVR
Standalone Digital Video Recorders are normally equipped with Linux as operating system(embedded) which is excluded from the outside world.
The advantage of this is that it is less succeptable to virus attacks and subsequently less maintenance intensive.
Standalone DVR’s are more diverse in utilization in extreme conditions. PC’s are normally sensitive to temperatures and will subsequently affect your decision although this problem could be addressed by ensuring the correct housing of equipment. Standalone DVR’s are also not subjected to Microsoft Anti-Virus software and subsequent continueous updates.
Standalone DVR’s can unfortunately only expand to 16 channels.
An important aspect to keep in mind when making your decision is that more features and functionality requires more training and skills.
It must also be noted that technology changes fast. A PC based DVR System is considered a more adaptable system and thus an advisable option.
Advantages of both DVR Systems:
PC-BASED DVR
• Utilization of existing IT infrastructure for remote monitoring and backup
• Maintenance by company’s IT technician
• Upgradeable Computer Hardware (HDD size, Processor
Speed, Graphics etc)
• DVR channels can be upgraded
• Easy availability of spare parts
• Familiarity of Windows Software
• Stability of Win2K’s NTFS file system
STAND-ALONE DVR
• Ideal for non-PC-literate users
• Quick start
• Similar to a VCR
• Can be used for mobile applications

Our Consultants will provide you with a custom made solution to ensure your needs are addressed effectively.
What you need to know about CCTV Surveillance Systems
CCTV (Close Circuit Television) Systems are primarily used for protection of assets and personal safety which include the following:
• Perimeter Surveillance
• Access Control
• Vehicle Number Plate Recognition
In addition to the most commonly use of CCTV Systems as mentioned above, Law Enforcement Agencies and Large Organizations and to a lesser extent, small to medium size enterprises may require CCTV Systems to gather evidence or add legitimacy to decision making processes. This application will typically be installed in Board rooms and / or public offices such as Court rooms, Identification Rooms, Community Centres, etc.
Before deciding on the implementation of CCTV in the workplace, it is important to identify the purpose of the project as this will determine what equipment will be required. The following questions need to be asked:
• How important is Real Time viewing, in other words, viewing of current images.
• Will the CCTV System be backed up by a Control Room
• Will the CCTV System be linked to other networks and/or security monitoring systems such as alarms?
• Is the CCTV System applied as a deterrent
• Is integration with other Security Systems such as Security Guards required?
• Is the CCTV System required for the gathering of evidence
• Will CCTV footage be required for criminal procedures if need be.
• Is the project of clandestine nature?
Real Time viewing of CCTV footage is necessarily associated with a Control Room or similar set up. One or more cameras will be linked to a Control Room where a Control Room Operator will monitor incidents and respond accordingly as required. Huge progress has been made in this field with specific reference to Camera Activation upon the detection of movement. This allows the Operator to monitor multiple cameras and being alerted to critical areas requiring attention.
Depending on the purpose of the CCTV System, it is most effective when integrated with other Security Systems/Processes such as a Security Officers at Access Points and perimeter patrols. This refers to Business Parks, Golf Estates, Hotels, Hospitals, etc.
CCTV Systems may be required to look at footage retro-spectively, in other words after the footage has been recorded. a Typical application of this method is factories where staff is monitored.
